Getting a camper van may be an excellent idea for a family that likes to travel a lot. While it might be relatively more comfortable for a smaller family, finding one suited to a big family, maybe a task. Some people want to do the job themselves, that is DIY a big van into a camper. However, if you are an amateur, you might mess up it up. Creating a custom camper takes a lot of work and many considerations. Regular furniture does not work for this purpose since they end up increasing the weight of the vehicle. Let us look at what most people think is the best camper van that can house six members.

Custom Camper – Mercedes Sprinter Camper Van

The Mercedes Sprinter is an excellent car for camping purposes. There are several versions of the vehicle. The latest is in 2018. However, we will talk about the 2017 model here. The van is a 24-foot extended body, high roof (7′ from floor to ceiling inside, 9′ from the ground to top outside) Mercedes Sprinter 2500 (no dual wheels) van. The van has two large windows, one on each side directly behind the passenger and driver’s seat, and has no partition between the cab and cargo/living area.

It is high priced, as you might have already guessed. So it might not be on the list for many people, especially if you are into flipping cars a lot. However, if you look at it as an investment, it will not disappoint. It is also something you can keep in the family for years and cherish. If you do it yourself, already have the tools and skills, and you know where to find affordable stuff, you can keep the cost under $5,000. I know of someone who did it on a $1,000 budget. Of course, it was necessary, with only a 100W solar panel, a small auxiliary battery, and basic furniture, but it was decent nonetheless.

A fully loaded RV version isn’t going to be able to tow as much as the short bed, low, heavy-duty cargo version. Older versions may pull less than newer versions, most likely, because they had different engines and transmissions. They have made 3/4 ton versions and dually 1-ton versions – though, I think Mercedes calls them by different names. Each will have its tow maximums.

For Business Purpose

Apart from camping, Mercedes Sprinter is also excellent as a business vehicle. While it is not cheap, the factory financing can make it more reasonable. Sometimes in business, when it comes to equipment, you can either by an old cheap piece of equipment or a new expensive one. The old one is going to cost more in repairs while the new one will come at a higher cost or monthly payment.

I would instead put the money in equipment, which can be shown as an asset rather than repairs, which can be an expense. When my business grew, I bought sizable commercial box trucks, but I still have the sprinter. It is suitable for residential deliveries or for delivering smaller loads. For example, my box trucks can hold ten pallets of material, and my sprinter can hold two. So if I have a shorter delivery, a sprinter is preferable to a full-sized 24-foot box truck. It’s a lot cheaper to run.
